James Earl Mathematics Endowed Scholarship

In 1973 Mrs. Margaret Earl set up the James Earl Mathematics Scholarship for UNO undergraduate mathematics majors, in honor of her husband, Dr. James Earl. Dr. Earl joined the UNO Mathematics Department in 1931, became department chair in 1932, and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1962. Starting in Fall 1973 three $1000 scholarships were awarded to deserving undergraduate mathematics majors. In Spring 2002 the scholarship fund was anonymously endowed with $125,000. Beginning in Fall 2002, scholarships will be awarded annually amongst several deserving mathematics majors.

Criteria:

· Undergraduate student majoring in Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences

· High overall GPA (typically 3.0 or higher)

· Outstanding performance in mathematics courses

· High participation in departmental activities such as the Putnam Exam, Problem of the Week, undergraduate research, MSLC and Math Lab tutoring, Math Club
