Jim and Shirley Young Scholars

Young Scholars is a privately funded scholarship program that supports first-generation students attending UNO. If selected, students receive a full financial scholarship and also become a part of a community of learners that receive academic, social, and career development support during their college careers. Students that are selected typically meet the following criteria. Demonstrate financial need but are not eligible for federal Pell Grants or other significant scholarship assistance, be a first-generation college student (i.e. neither parent received a degree from a 4-year college or university), graduate from a Omaha Metro area high school.
In addition to the above criteria, candidates that are selected typically demonstrate the following qualities; High level of responsibility and reliability in following through with commitments, strong motivation to attend college and complete a degree, interest and track record of participating in volunteer/service activities, and participation in student organizations and extra-curricular activities

Supplemental Questions
  1. You must provide the name and email address of one reference. This person should be a high school teacher/counselor, UNO faculty/staff member, or advisor from an educational organization (such as Avenue Scholars or College Possible). The reference you list will be sent an email asking to submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf.
  2. Please upload a 2-3 page essay outlining your background and educational goals. In your essay, please include your thoughts on why you are interested in attending UNO, your possible major and career plans, your current plans to pay for college, and how being involved in this scholarship program might impact your educational and career goals.
  3. Please upload a copy of the most recent available transcript from your previous/current school (high school or community college). Unofficial copies of transcripts are accepted.
  4. Please indicate your SAI (Student Aid Index) as shown on your current FAFSA Submission Summary. If you do not have it yet please enter 9999.
