Next Generation Leadership Scholarship

The Next Generation Leadership Scholarship (NGLS) was established by Nancy Mammel and the Mammel Foundation to encourage and reward academic excellence and community engagement among UNO students with significant financial need.

The fund supports two $3,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen and up to ten $1000-$2000 scholarships to upperclassment and renewals per academic year. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

-Minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) -Evidence of community engagement -Graduate from the following districts: Omaha Public Schools, Bellevue Public Schools, Ralston Public Schools, or Papillion-LaVista Public Schools -Admitted and/or enrolled in the following UNO colleges: Arts & Sciences, Education, Communication, Fine Arts & Media, Public Affairs & Community Service, or be an undecided major in ACDC/University Division

  1. Other Scholarships-Have you been awarded any other scholarships for the forthcoming academic year in college (2023-2024)? Please list scholarships including but not limited to Regents Scholarship, Thompson Learning Community (TLC), Goodrich Scholarship Program, College Opportunity Scholarship.
  2. Personal Statement-Your personal statement should be approximately 300-400 words. Be sure to address the following: 1) your career goals/aspirations; 2) your record of leadership and community engagement; 3) how you hope to make a difference in the city of Omaha through present and future leadership and community service; and 4) how this award will benefit you.
  3. Please explain any obstacles you have overcome due to your neighborhood and/or community circumstances.
  4. What knowledge and experiences have you had living or working in a diverse community or organization? Please provide specific examples.
  5. Please provide two letters of recommendation. For new freshmen, please provide one from each of these sources: a teacher or counselor from your high school, and a community organization where you volunteer. For current UNO students (new applicants), please provide a letter from each of these sources: a UNO faculty member, and a community organization where you volunteer. For current NGLS recipients letters of reference are not required.
